On Saturday we drove out (through Virgina's ugly strip-mall country, then graceful horse country) to Ayrshire Farm, where the cofounder of Cisco Systems has put her many millions to good use. Sandy Lerner raises heritage-breed animals humanely on a gorgeous piece of land, complete with rolling hills, tree-lined entry drive, English gardens, a gray stone mansion, and a stable that's nicer (not to mention cleaner) than most people's houses. Twice a year it's open to the public as part of a county-wide farm tour; I've already got this fall's date in my calendar.
